What is this picture book about?
Join Simon, and the superhero of the day, Asha, as they celebrate at their annual class party. Everyone brings something delicious and extravagant to the party, but not Simon. Asha heads off on a noble journey to discover why … and what she finds changes how she behaves, once and for all.
This evocative and moving book encourages empathy, understanding, and ultimately sharing and caring in children - and in all who read it.
A stark reminder of the challenges some children face at school, this story shows us what we can all do about it.

An excerpt from the story
It's nearly the end of the school year, and that means it's time for a class party! Class parties are the best! Everyone brings lots of food, and eats and eats and eats.
One girl in the class, Asha, is bringing sushi to the class party. Another boy, Arjun, is bringing samosas. And Charlotte, the class captain, is bringing cupcakes with everyone's names on them.
But one boy, Simon, can't bring very much at all. He's bringing salad. But it isn't just any salad, it's a very sad looking salad, indeed...

A beautiful story about being kind
Aside from the fact my partner is called Simon....! I also really like this picture book because it has a 'real' message - with a lovely twist and colourful illustrations - which many young school children should relate to. And the tough printing product is high quality. Well done Ethicool.
It is a Christmas gift so no review from the recipient but I love it!
Oh wow, what a beautiful story. I'm sure we all know someone or have been in Simon's position at some point in our life. This is a great book for schools to have in their libraries. There are many out there these days who are struggling and the lesson of sharing and caring in this beautiful story is very educational and well, just lovely.
The bright and bubbly illustrations in this children's book help share a sad but lovely message about the diverse world we live in and what one person can do to help make someone else's life that bit brighter. Poverty, kindness and friendship are all touched on lightly in this story allowing for wonderful discussions and learning about how we can care for others.
Thank you Ethicool for sharing yet another thoughtful and empowering story of hope.
Simon and the Sad Salad
My 3yo really enjoyed this book and I found it really useful to help start the conversation about those that don’t have much and what we can do to help each other
Ethicool Books aren't just talking the talk, they are walking the walk! 👏🌏 I received Simon and the Sad Salad by Teigan Margetts and was super impressed to see it delivered in a compostable, zero-waste bag! Nice work 👌 I really loved that this story featured diverse children and that there was a clear message and encouragement to not just think about others, but to find a way to help those less fortunate than yourself. I can't recall a picture book that deals with the issue of poverty from a kids perspective like this. It was a springboard for LOTS of powerful questions from my kids.
Despite the fact that approximately 15 million children—21 percent—in the United States live in poverty, it’s not a topic that appear in picture books very often. Simon and the Sad Salad, I think, addresses a very real, very important gap in the market, helping children living in poverty to feel seen and included and helping children not affected by poverty to understand and support friends who are. This is a big topic, but Simon and the Sad Salad communicates it clearly and simply, making it relatable and comprehensible.
Conveys an important message in a sweet story that captivated my son
